In 1978, Pedro Meyer traveled through a war-torn Nicaragua, interviewed Anastasio Somoza inside his bunker, lived alongside leaders and combatants of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), and photographed the daily life of a society suspended between fear and hope. In this work, the photographer shows how power, violence, and the desire for freedom transform the lives of those who experience them. Major political decisions coexist here with the anonymous gestures of men, women, and children who rarely find a place in official narratives.
Almost half a century later, these photographs and texts transcend the Nicaraguan case to become a reflection on memory, testimony, and the fragility of all historical certainty. Ideologies may age and discourses fade, but faces remain. And it is precisely in them that these two volumes find their most enduring truth.
