PEDRO MEYER

(Madrid, Spain 1935)

Pedro Meyer (1935) is a Mexican photographer, curator, editor, and visual artist who continues to innovate at the age of 90. His collection includes more than 1 million images of the most diverse themes of human endeavor.

Known for his contributions to the professional photographic development in Latin America, he has always maintained a focus on the universal themes of photography, throughout the transition from analog to digital.

The Miramar collection, on which Pedro Meyer is currently working, includes more than 40 books, in which he covers his life and work, where the author seeks to create a narrative as diverse as the experiences of society itself. The transition of photography through the technological changes that influence both content and form, constitute an essential part of the author’s concerns.

1. Pioneer of Digital Photography:

He is considered a pioneer in digital photography. He adopted and developed digital technology early on in 1995 and founded the first online photography gallery, ZoneZero. He recognized the potential of digital tools to democratize photography, making it more accessible to a wider audience.

2. Advocacy for Photography as Art:

Through his work as a photographer and curator, he has contributed to consolidating the presence of photography in the art world, promoting its recognition as a form of artistic expression on par with other disciplines.

3. Cultural Critique and Social Commentary:

Meyer’s photography frequently addresses social and political issues, offering a critical perspective on contemporary society. His images provoke reflection and thought on topics such as identity, power dynamics, and human rights.

4. Educator and Mentor:

Pedro Meyer has been actively involved in education and mentoring in visual culture. Through workshops, talks, and writings, he has shared his knowledge and perspectives with photographers in training, helping to inspire the next generation of visual storytellers.

5. Pedro Meyer Foundation and Foto Museo Cuatro Caminos.

He promoted the creation of a non-profit foundation dedicated to promoting visual literacy and providing support to photographers, an institution that currently bears his name. Through social service programs with various universities, the PM Foundation has supported hundreds of students in their training as visual creators. In 2015, he inaugurated the Foto Museo Cuatro Caminos, the largest photography museum in the country located north of Mexico City.
